Bob Skunda Joins McGuireWoods Consulting

RICHMOND - McGuireWoods Consulting today announced that Robert T. Skunda has joined the firm as a Senior Consultant of Infrastructure & Economic Development. Skunda recently retired as the President and C.E.O. of the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park (VBRP) in Richmond and is a former Secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The annual Foreign Investors Summit organized by the Business Review publication was held in Bucharest in mid-October, bringing together business leaders from all of major industries operating in Romania. The summit included both panels and workshops that focused on the most relevant topics for industry executives, foreign investors and business associations. McGuireWoods Romania was invited to play the speaker-moderator role for two of the Summit's most popular panels, bringing forward the expertise of our Bucharest office in key sectors such as agribusiness and automotive.

Tax Policy Update

NUMBER OF THE WEEK: 2. The number of new corporate tax inversion deals announced since the U.S. Treasury Department issued new regulations Sept. 22 to make the deals more difficult and less financially appealing. Ohio-based Steris Corp. offered to buy UK's Synergy Health Plc in a deal that would shift Steris' tax domicile to Britain, and Houston-based oilfield housing supplier Civeo Corp said it will redomicile in Canada for tax purposes.

The \"break-up fee\" that Illinois-based pharmaceutical company AbbVie Inc. must pay Ireland-based Shire Plc. for backing out of the $54 billion cross-border merger deal that was called off last week due to the U.S. Treasury Department's recently released anti-inversion regulations. But, this breakup has a silver (or gold) lining -- it's tax deductible. \r\n
