McGuireWoods Consulting senior advisor Jim Dyke, along with his wife Ellen Dyke, were recognized last week at the 2018 Raise the Region Gala. Hosted by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, Jim and Ellen Dyke were honored with the 2018 Community Leadership Award at the gala.
The Community Leadership Award is the longest standing community-based recognition award in Northern Virginia. It is presented each year for outstanding commitment and dedication to improving the quality of life for all Northern Virginians.
“We could not be more pleased to honor Ellen and Jim Dyke with the 2018 Community Leadership Award,” said Eileen Ellsworth, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. “Through public service and active participation with many organizations across our region, Ellen and Jim give of their time, resources and energy to make this community a better place to live, work and play.”
Community leaders, including former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale, Sen. Mark Warner, Sen. Tim Kaine, Scott Ralls, President of Northern Virginia Community College, Bobbie Kilberg, President and CEO of the Northern Virginia Technology Council, and Sharon Bulova, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman all paid tribute to Jim and Ellen Dyke in a video played at the gala.
“There are no two people who personify that notion of civic engagement and broadly shared prosperity in a region more so than Jim and Ellen Dyke,” said Scott Ralls, President of Northern Virginia Community College.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Speaker of the House Kirk Cox gave remarks at the gala.
“I cannot think of a couple that has given more back to their community, and more back to this Commonwealth over the years,” said Gov. Northam.
Jim and Ellen Dyke’s history of community leadership and public service is well respected throughout Northern Virginia and beyond. Jim Dyke has worked with all components of the community throughout his career, and has been an active leader in the Northern Virginia business community.
Jim Dyke has served as Virginia’s Secretary of Education, chairman of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, chairman of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Northern Virginia Business Roundtable, president of the Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation, in addition to various other commissions and committees related to education, economic development and job creation. He has been appointed to a board or commission by every Virginia governor, both Democrats and Republicans, since Gov. Robb in 1986.
“Ellen has played a major role in my attaining my public service roles,” said Dyke. “In fact, we have been a true partnership right from day one.”
The Raise the Region Gala was attended by more than 600 community business, philanthropic and community leaders. Attendees celebrated the region’s growth and diversity, and helped raise critical funds to support the Community Foundation’s work in the community.
