As the U.S. celebrated another Constitution Day on Sept. 17, Frank Donatelli, McGuireWoods Consulting executive vice president and director, reflected on a speech given by President Ronald Reagan 31 years ago, on the 200th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution.
At the time of the speech, Donatelli was serving in the Reagan White House as an assistant to the President for political and intergovernmental affairs.
In a Sept. 20 article for the Washington Examiner, Donatelli recounts traveling with Reagan to Philadelphia and how the past president’s words are relevant especially now – the enduring meaning of our Constitution has kept America grounded through similar difficult times in our past.
“America has overcome division before. Reagan’s remarks on Constitution Day 31 years ago are still relevant to helping us meet today’s challenges,” Donatelli said. “The Constitution is our bulwark, but success also requires an informed and active citizenry and a healthy respect for the views of others if we are to insure that we remain the indispensable nation.”
