Former Top Senate Finance Official to Join McGuireWoods
"Throughout his many years on Capitol Hill, Russ developed a reputation as someone who knows how to work with people on both sides of the aisle to get the job done," said McGuireWoods Chairman Richard Cullen. "With his experience and keen insight into complex issues like taxation and changes in the healthcare market, it is no wonder that so many considered him the most sought-after staff member to leave Capitol Hill this past year. As we continue to expand the platform of services the law firm and our consulting group offer our clients, we are excited that Russ will be a part of that growth here at his new home at McGuireWoods."
Sullivan started working on Capitol Hill in 1995 and joined the Senate Finance Committee staff in 1999. He served as the staff director to the committee from 2004 until his retirement from the Senate earlier this year. During his tenure, many of the most complex issues facing the business community came before the committee.
"I am joining McGuireWoods because they help their clients identify opportunities, minimize their risks and resolve their problems, and I’m excited to be a part of that team," Sullivan said. "In a complicated world, McGuireWoods has the people and resources to find innovative solutions to the challenges business organizations face today."
Sullivan brings a unique perspective to a wide variety of issues facing a broad range of industries, including tax, healthcare, energy, pensions, transportation, trade and economic development, as well as matters involving the nonprofit and for-benefit enterprise sectors. In addition to providing strategic legal counsel, Sullivan will advise clients on strategy and business planning as a senior advisor to McGuireWoods Consulting. It is one of only a few public affairs firms in the nation with deep experience and solid bipartisan relationships not only in Washington but also in state capitals around the country. Word of his move to the private sector drew praise from several of Sullivan’s former colleagues.
"Russ is a man of integrity, knowledge and legislative skill," said House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI). "I have always valued his judgment. He was a go-to guy, even for me as a Republican in the House."
A native of Little Rock, Ark., he graduated from Baylor University and received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1987. Sullivan, 52, is also active in the community. He serves on the board of Capital Area Reach, a mentoring program for students in Washington, D.C. He has also served as the legal or designated guardian for 18 teenage boys.
