McGuireWoods Consulting Launches West Coast Outpost, Bolstering National Reach
McGuireWoods Consulting recently announced it was establishing a government affairs presence on the West Coast. Senior vice president, co-leader of MWC’s national education team, and member of the national and multistate practice team Scott Frein transitioned to Los Angeles on Jan. 1, 2020.
With three McGuireWoods LLP offices already established in California — two in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco — Frein will work closely with law firm colleagues to bolster MWC’s government relations services to clients.
“I am excited and encouraged about our transition of McGuireWoods Consulting to the West Coast,” said Frein. “Our history of growing with the law firm, and the opportunities that will come with opening another consulting office, will provide greater brand awareness as a firm, along with the capabilities to better serve our clients in California and beyond.”
Frein has nearly 20 years of experience working on policy and legislative matters at the national, federal and state levels with clients ranging from international nonprofit and national organizations to publicly traded companies, higher education institutions and startups. Prior to joining MWC in 2016, Frein served as the executive director of policy, advocacy and government relations for ACT Inc. — best known for its college admissions exam, the ACT test. He led ACT’s Washington, D.C., office and oversaw the organization’s policy development, federal government relations and state government relations teams.
“We are thrilled with MWC’s expansion and look forward to welcoming Scott Frein to the West Coast,” said Los Angeles partner Greg Evans. “As a leading law firm, and with a large presence in California, this has been a long time coming to answer the call of our clients on public affairs issues.”
With MWC offices currently spanning the East Coast and as far west as Illinois and Texas, a West Coast presence will further expand MWC’s reach, positioning team members to better work with companies based in California, businesses looking to establish a California footprint, and clients in the market for a national government affairs firm with state roots and a strong federal presence.
“Scott Frein’s work on the national level made him a clear choice to lead McGuireWoods Consulting’s move to the West Coast,” said Gov. Jim Hodges, president of McGuireWoods Consulting. “His leadership skills, strong education practice and multistate reach will allow him to build a formidable team for MWC as we move forward with a new base in California.”
Mark Bowles, chairman of McGuireWoods Consulting, echoed Hodges: “MWC continues to grow at the state and federal levels, and we are confident a West Coast presence will elevate our client service to an even greater level, as we strategically position our firm in areas of influence.”
