McGuireWoods Consulting is pleased to announce that former North Carolina Congressman G. K. Butterfield has joined the firm as a Senior Advisor in its Washington D.C., office.
Butterfield served in Congress since 2004, where he was a former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and senior member of the Democratic Party’s Whip team. As part of the Whip operation, he worked with the Democratic leadership to help formulate policy and rally support for the Caucus’ legislative priorities on the House Floor.
In November 2014, Congressman Butterfield was unanimously elected Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus for the 114th Congress. As chairman, Butterfield focused on promoting anti-poverty programs, expanding economic development and job creation, protecting voting rights, and advocating for the appointment of African American to judgeships and senior Administration positions.
Butterfield was also a member of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee. On the Committee, he was an advocate for quality healthcare, rural broadband expansion, consumer privacy, renewable energy, and lower energy rates. He served on the Subcommittees on Communications and Technology; Energy; and Health and was a ranking member of the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee.
Butterfield’s prior committee service includes the House Agriculture Committee, the House Armed Services Committee, and the Ethics Committee.
Butterfield helped pass legislation that has directed more than $100 million in federal dollars to the First District and consistently supported projects in his district that work to increase student achievement and expand economic opportunity. He successfully fought for funding for transportation and redevelopment projects and has secured funding to support important health care programs in the First District.
As a member of the House Committee that was a key architect of the Affordable Care Act, he was a champion of healthcare issues and an outspoken opponent of any attempts to repeal the law.

Before his election to Congress, Butterfield served as a Superior Court Judge for 13 years and was appointed in 2001 to the North Carolina Supreme Court, where he authored more than 15 opinions on cases involving judicial sentencing procedures, eminent domain, and the application of capital punishment.
Butterfield began his career as a civil rights attorney who won several important voting rights cases.
He received his J.D. and his B.A. from North Carolina Central University, where he organized voter registration drives.
