On July 22, 2022, Richmond Law alumni magazine featured McGuireWoods Consulting assistant vice president and McGuireWoods counsel Margaret Rockwell in an article discussing her role helping draft “Zoning and Segregation in Virginia: Part 2 — Expanding Housing Choices for the Future of Virginia.”
The report is the second part of an in-depth study by McGuireWoods and McGuireWoods Consulting documenting the history of housing segregation in Virginia through zoning and planning laws. It makes recommendations to local and state government for reducing inequalities.
“We hope it starts a conversation about why we still have racial segregation in Virginia,” said Margaret, an alumnus of the University of Richmond School of Law. “Hopefully this encourages individuals to seek solutions and take steps to start fully integrating our society here in Virginia.”
She added: “There is a clear dichotomy between Virginia’s poor record of housing integration and its vision for expanding growth. It’s time for government and the private sector to take direct, intentional action to address the lack of integrated communities in the commonwealth. This action will, in turn, increase Black wealth, which will ultimately increase the economic capabilities of the state.”
