Early Voting for Texas Runoff Elections Continues
Texans have until July 10th to vote during the early voting period for runoff elections. The runoffs for these primary elections were originally scheduled to be held May 26th, but were moved to July 14th due to the pandemic. Additionally, Governor Abbott extended the typical 7-day early voting period to 14 days.
U.S. Senate Runoff
The Democratic primary had 12 candidates vying to challenge Senator John Cornyn in November. No candidate was able to secure a majority in the Democratic primary, so a runoff between MJ Hegar and Texas Senator Royce West will take place. You may remember MJ Hegar from her narrow loss to Congressman John Carter last election cycle. Hegar is a former air force helicopter pilot who resides in Round Rock, Texas. Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) has represented Dallas-based Senate District 23 since 1992 and is highly respected by the Democratic establishment. Senator West did not have to give up his Senate seat in order to run for US Senate because he is only in the second year of his four year term.

Texas Senate Runoffs
The Republican Party does not have any runoff elections for the Texas Senate. In the Democratic party, longtime incumbent Senator Eddie Lucio (D-Brownsville) is facing a runoff election against Sara Stapleton-Barrera in South Texas, while Representative Roland Gutierrez (D-San Antonio) and Xochil Pena Rodriguez face off for a chance to represent Senate District 27. Senate District 27 stretches from San Antonio to West Texas.

Special Election
A special election runoff will be held on July 14th to fill Senate District 14. This seat has been vacant since April 30th when Senator Kirk Watson (D-Austin) resigned to take a position with the University of Houston. This election was scheduled to be held May 2nd, but the Governor pushed the election back via executive order because of COVID-19 concerns. The six candidates vying for this Senate seat are as follows:
- Representative Eddie Rodriguez (D)
- Former Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt (D)
- Former Austin City Council Member Don Zimmerman (R)
- Attorney Waller Burns (R)
- Former Lago Vista Council Member Pat Dixon (L)
- Physician Jeff Ridgeway (I)
Most believe this election will head into a runoff as it will be tough for one candidate to get over 50% of the vote with six candidates in the race. Like the runoff elections, early voting begins Monday, June 29th and lasts through Monday, July 6th.
