Microsoft is investing at least $1 billion in Catawba County by building four data centers there, local officials announced Wednesday.

A “blueprint” for how to reform North Carolina’s teacher licensure system — to include more evaluations and tie licenses directly to much higher salaries — is headed to the State Board of Education.

WUNC: North Carolina Republicans finish 1 seat short of supermajority in General Assembly
North Carolina Republicans came within one seat of gaining a supermajority in the state General Assembly. On Tuesday night, the state GOP did gain a supermajority in the North Carolina Senate.

INDEPENDENT TRIBUNE: Brian Echevarria says he won’t concede yet in N.C. House race
Brian Echevarria said he isn’t yet conceding in the N.C. House District 73 race. Republican Echevarria and Democrat Diamond Staton-Williams competed in the District 73 race.

WNCT: Farkas not conceding after election loss; Reeder talks about his win
While Dr. Tim Reeder was declared the winner of Tuesday’s election for the NC House of Representatives District 9 race, incumbent Brian Farkas said he has not yet conceded the loss.

NC HEALTH NEWS: Understaffed environmental agency ‘stretched to the limit’
Nearly one-fifth of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s job positions are unfilled, leaving the agency responsible for administering regulations to protect water, air quality and the public’s health in a tight pinch that is not likely to loosen any time soon.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein on Nov. 8 filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting Western North Carolina cities and counties in an antitrust lawsuit alleging anti-competitive practices hinder health care access for residents and government employees.

ASSOCIATED PRESS: NC legislators: Medicaid expansion efforts pushed to 2023
North Carolina Republican legislative leaders said Wednesday that they’re shuttling the idea of Medicaid expansion to 2023, rather than attempting to negotiate a bill that could be voted on before the General Assembly’s current two-year edition ends in December.

The state evenly split its U.S. House delegation in the 2022 midterm election, with Democrats and Republicans each winning seven of the 14 seats up for grabs. Republicans flipped control of the state Supreme Court, which could impact congressional maps next year, and by extension, elections throughout the rest of the decade.
