Florida Special Session Update: Lawmakers Returning to Redraw Congressional Map

On March 29, 2022, just a few weeks after the regular 2022 legislative session adjourned sine die, Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed the legislature’s Congressional map and officially called a special session for lawmakers to take the issue back up. Unlike the redrawn state House and Senate maps, which go directly to the Florida Supreme Court for approval, the Congressional map must be approved by the governor.

The special session will begin at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, with an end time of no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 22. Currently the call is limited to redistricting but could be amended to include issues that were not addressed or left unresolved in the regular session, such as property insurance, “constitutional carry” of firearms, data privacy, and condo safety reforms following the Surfside building collapse in 2021.
