Gena focuses on developing communications strategies and executing tactical elements of public relations and marketing communications initiatives for clients. She has significant business experience, having previously directed communications efforts for a state chamber of commerce, state department of commerce, and two Virginia congressional offices.
Gena’s current practice focuses on advising clients with corporate communications needs, whether they are bringing new initiatives to the marketplace or in need of issue oriented messaging and digital strategies to impact public opinion, Gena has managed public relations and messaging strategies for large companies, startups, coalitions, and trade associations.
After graduating from Furman University in 2008, Gena spent 6 years on Capitol Hill working for Georgia Congressman Phil Gingrey, Virginia Congressman Robert Hurt, and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia. As a congressional aide, she helped members establish and grow a digital media presence, as well as directed efforts for grassroots and public communications outreach, crisis communications, brand and identity management, and public relations efforts.
Following her work on Capitol Hill, Gena relocated to Columbia, South Carolina and joined the communications team at the South Carolina Department of Commerce under Secretary Bobby Hitt. There, she helped grow the Department of Commerce’s digital presence, assisted in public relations efforts at the agency, and served as a communications liaison between the Department of Commerce and the Governor’s office.
Prior to joining McGuireWoods Consulting, Gena most recently served as an associate vice president of communications and public relations at the South Carolina State Chamber of Commerce where she directed all communications and public relations efforts and led the rebranding effort of the Chamber and its political action committee.
